Tornados Leave Many In Immediate Need
I am sending this to each of you to let you know the status of Jasper County Citizens effected by the Tornados that hit on February 18th. There are many families with needs in our county, some my office are aware of and are working with these families, and we are sure there are more out there. We have also received numerous calls of people wanting to help.
The family of Michelle Johnson, a Jasper County EMT lost everything. The tornado destroyed their home and took the life of one of their horses. We have many other residents that have damage such as roof damage, structural damage, and large amounts of debris.
What I am requesting of you is to help us spread the word about the assistance needed. The Jasper County EMA office is coordinating the recovery efforts. If you know of anyone that needs assistance or would like to help in any way, please have them contact me or Melissa Slocumb at the office – 706-468-4930.
The outreach from the community has already been tremendous, but we need to make this an organized effort.
Lastly, we also need help getting the word out to the community about the massive debris that has been generated by this storm. Presently, our landfill cannot take demolition debris of any large amount (i.e. building materials, shingles, etc.) and cannot handle the amount of debris from trees that has been generated. We are requesting that citizens presently separate debris and do not bring to the landfill. We are working with the State of Georgia in requesting assistance for the future removal all types of debris. We should have an answer and public information for dealing with debris by late Monday or early Tuesday.
Any help you can give me with this would be greatly appreciated. Please spread the word. Those of you who have website or webpage access please post this information.
